Biking & Hiking
Explore the Mille Lacs Soo Line Trail
The Mille Lacs Soo Line Trail is 11 miles of side-by-side paved and gravel multiple-use trails connecting Mille Lacs Kathio and Father Hennepin State Parks — passing through scenic forests and countryside along the way. If you’re lucky, you may even spot the mysterious albino whitetail deer that lives nearby.
Don’t forget to pack your swimming gear, Father Hennepin State Park features a beautiful beach and swimming area, the perfect spot to take a dip in Lake Mille Lacs during a break from your biking or hiking adventure.
The trail is the finest developed section of the Soo Line Rail roadbed that will eventually connect Genola, MN to Superior, WI. The trail provides a scenic tour for hiking, biking and rollerblading. See maps for biking and hiking trails.
And yes, the Mille Lacs Soo Line Trail is an approved area to gain mileage for the Minnesota State Parks and Trails’ 125 Miles by Bike, Boot or Boat Challenge.

A couple other great biking options are located a short distance away:
The Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails are only 22 miles west of Garrison. These trails are open to mountain biking (standard or fat tires) as well as trail jogging and hiking during the summer months and fat bikes, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing during the winter.
Just a 1/2 hour south of Mille Lacs is the Milaca Mountain Bike Trail which offers a 14-mile single track system nestled within 200 acres of woods, hills and fields along the scenic Rum River. The trails are accessed through the City of Milaca's Rec Park, located just north of Milaca High School.
